The 1990s were colorfull. In 1991 Wolfsburg gave us the third generation Golf – and two concept cars under the name Vario.
The Vario I Concept.
Who else still knows what a cassette tape is? And who can remember My first Sony? Under the label “My first Sony” you could buy brightly colored cassette recorders for the youngest and soon to be pubescent. They were made of brightly colored plastic with large colorful buttons with simplified controls. A cassette tape recorder was the weapon of choice when it came to playing music until well into the 1990s. Off course you had a Walkman or something like that. However it came about, but at #Volkswagen they built an entire car directly around such a cassette recorder. No joke!
Based on a #Golf, a kind of modern buggy was created for the 1990s. The Volkswagen Vario 1 Concept. More 1990s is not really possible. Let’s start with the idea of the buggy, which is both vibrant and far from life. At least in a country like Germany, which I associate above all with the colour grey. The seats combine all the colours of a rainbow.
Apart from that, turquoise is the colour you want to wear – this gives the “my first Sony” cassette recorder in the dashboard special attention. Now have a look, and enjoy this perfect example of a 1990s perspective of a fun car and play some Ace of Base songs to it.
The Vario II Concept
But that was not the end. Less funky and nothing Sony involved, there was another Vario Concept, the Vario II. Same year, different idea. Yet, it’s hard to say what it is, but it`s a 2+2 convertible, that used the same platform as Vario I with the 1.9 litre engine with 100PS. The roof construction was some sort of folding roof targa – with a rather strange seating arrangement, pretty much like a modern interpretation of the “dickey seat”, you find on some 1930s cars.
Only Fans is in the making. Literally great content!

Absolutely, but when I look at all the Pike-Cars, the Pao remains my abolute favourite :)
The Nissan S-Cargo was also quite a neat design from the 90s. 😊
